Enlightened Waste: Designers Work With Recycled Materials

Displayed at the London Design Festival, Enlightened Waste is the collection of work by two designers working with recycled materials. Designers Thierry Jeannot and Gisela Stiegler both work primarily with recycled materials, creating incredibly tasteful looking lamps that could kick their material hungry counterparts any given day, and twice on Sunday.

Skydrops Concept Collects Fresh Water From The Sky

Skydrops concept by designers Guilherme Rodrigues and Murilo Gomes is a simple device for extracting potable water from the atmosphere and sending it back to the Earth for consumption. The concept employs a helium balloon to go into the sky. As it gains altitude, the wind makes blades on the concept spin, energy from which is used to cool its metallic sheets using peltier cells.

Volkswagen Nils Electric Car Concept

At this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen displayed the Nils concept, a tiny single-seater electric vehicle. The tiny car has its body made out of aluminum space frame that keeps its weight to a low 1014lbs. Power comes from a 25kW electric motor that creates 130Nm of torque and sends energy to the rear wheels. Nils concept can go from zero to 62 mph in 11 seconds and has a top speed of 81 mph.

Non-functional Oil Rig Escape Pods Turned Into a Hotel

A lot of charm for the hotel industry lies in going to places you haven’t been to before, and in experiences that aren’t all that easy to come by. We guess these floating hotel rooms would fall fair and square into the second category. Devised by garbage architect Denis Oudendijk, these hotel rooms are made from retired oil rig escape pods.

Landfillart Project Makes Art Out of Hubcaps

Landfillart Project is an artistic endeavor that has gone beyond borders, professionals, artists, all to reach a single object: hubcaps. The project started with an idea by Ken Marquis who saw 41 rusted wheel covers while attending an Auto Show near Allentown. He got them all, then bought a thousand more and with the help of his artist friends, Marquis transformed these rusty hubcaps into artistic pieces.

Insects Made From Old Kitchen Pieces

There is so much that can be done with a sprinkling of creativity on the mundane things of everyday life. All it took to create these artistic pieces was scrap metal from old cooking utensils and parts of lamps. Of course, the critical skill here would be putting it all together in a way that any of it actually makes sense. The results to say the least, are encouraging.
